Assessment of Rehabilitation Programmes and Government Budgets Project

Assessment of Rehabilitation Programmes and Government Budgets for Female Inmates and Their Children in Lagos and Kuje Correctional Centres in Nigeria (2023 -2024) With funding support from MacArthur Foundation

This project will be implemented by a consortium of non-governmental organizations, Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) and the Center for Gender Economics Initiative (CGE Africa).

The project aims to empower and support female incarcerated inmates and their children, a 2010 report by the United States Human Rights Commission stated that more than 300 children are in Nigerian prisons, a claim the Federal Government refuted.

It focuses on assessing the gaps in government funding and the effectiveness of rehabilitation, educational, social, and economic opportunities for women in custody. It will also support providing necessary resources for incarcerated women and their children. The project’s outcome will enhance policy decisions, improve practice and rehabilitation programs, promote accountability, and generate knowledge for improved gender programming.
